Job Description
Description We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our team on a contract basis in Salinas, California. In this role, you will support the finance department by performing essential accounting tasks, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and maintaining accurate records. This is a great opportunity for an experienced accounting specialist to contribute to a dynamic organization and make an impact during this contract assignment.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and post journal entries while ensuring the accuracy of the general ledger.
- Reconcile financial accounts to maintain up-to-date and accurate records.
- Assist in creating monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP.
- Process accounts payable and receivable transactions, including managing vendor accounts and ensuring timely payments.
- Monitor budgets, track program expenditures, and generate variance reports to support financial planning.
- Collaborate with the payroll team to verify timesheets, process adjustments, and ensure compliance with payroll regulations.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends, discrepancies, and areas for improvement, providing actionable recommendations.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, state and federal regulations, and grant requirements.
- Support audit preparation by organizing documentation and responding to audit inquiries.
- Maintain accurate financial records and provide administrative support for special projects as needed. Requirements - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred, or equivalent work experience.
- At least 3 years of accounting experience, with a preference for experience in public sector or educational settings.
- Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, or Oracle, as well as advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong understanding of general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and financial reporting standards.
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
- Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to identify and resolve discrepancies in financial data.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
