Summary

The Phoenix VA Health Care System is recruiting for a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. This position is located at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center within the Diagnostic Imaging service. The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist is responsible for performing routine to moderately complex radiographic examination procedures. These exams are achieved by using diagnostic x-ray equipment such as portable machines, c-arm, and fixed fluoroscopic machines, and general diagnostic machines.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Radiography (ARRT) (R). Note: This does not apply at the GS-5 entry level technician.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
  • Note on Grandfathering Provision: May qualify if covered by the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (applicable to current VHA employees in this occupation who meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

  • GS-5: Experience or Education: None beyond the basic requirements.
  • GS-6: Experience or Education: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or the successful completion of one full academic year of graduate education leading to a degree in radiography or a related field. Demonstrated knowledge of basic technique standards, anatomy, patient safety procedures, radiographic equipment, and basic computer functions.
  • GS-7: Experience or Education: At least one year of experience demonstrating clinical competencies at the lower level, or graduate education, or certification in an advanced registry program. Knowledge includes digital image quality, contrast materials, radiation protection standards, computed radiography, PACS, and basic computer skills.
  • GS-8: Experience: At least one year demonstrating competencies at the previous level, with skills in system operation, calibration, patient records, physiologic monitoring, patient communication, anatomy, and cross-sectional anatomy. Full performance level with independent service provision in specialized areas.

Duties

  • Operate and monitor equipment performing routine procedures under supervision, with some duties involving more complex procedures for promotion readiness.
  • Explain exams to patients, troubleshoot equipment, report malfunctions, and assist in more complex examinations.
  • Perform a full range of radiologic procedures, including fluoroscopic exams, contrast media preparation, and bedside or operating room imaging.
  • Ensure patient safety, proper identification, and communication. Monitor vital signs and recognize allergic reactions. Maintain proficiency in emergency procedures and equipment.
  • Assist radiologists, participate in quality assurance, and perform additional duties such as inventory checks and training.
  • Work schedule: 40 hours/week; schedule to be discussed. Telework and virtual options are not available.
